Talk to a roofing contractor and they will be happy to tell you about the many roof replacement options available today. Getting all that information can be overwhelming, especially if you do not know much about roofing.

Nowadays, one of the biggest debates when it comes to roofing is choosing between slate shingles and asphalt shingles. Both are commonly used, but many homeowners often find themselves wondering which is better.

A roofing contractor explores slate shingles vs. asphalt shingles

This article will explore the key differences between these two roofing materials:

1. Asphalt roof shingles

When installed properly, asphalt roof shingles perform all the functions of a roof, like protecting the home from the elements, while beautifying it.

Pros:

  • Low cost: Asphalt is one of the most economical materials used to make roofs. It is a great option for homeowners who are working with a budget
  • Easy to install: While "easy" might not be the best word to use to describe the installation of a new roof, installing asphalt shingles requires less expertise than other types
  • Wide range of colors: Asphalt shingles are available in a wide variety of colors. It makes it easy to match the roof's color with the home
  • Roofing systems are available: Top manufacturers of asphalt shingles provide a complete roofing system to owners that include gutters, flashing and other supporting materials

Cons:

  • Fixed lifespan: Asphalt shingles have a finite lifespan, typically lasting about 30 years when properly installed and maintained
  • Limited durability: Asphalt shingles can be easily damaged by the homeowner walking on the roof or the elements. A damaged tile makes others around it more vulnerable to being damaged. The tiles are light enough that a strong wind can blow them off the roof. Temperature fluctuations also wreak havoc on the shingles
  • No good for the environment: The process of producing asphalt shingles is not friendly to the environment

2. Slate roof tiles

These materials have been used to make roofs for at least a few centuries. Slate roof tile delivers impressive aesthetics, durability and value to the home, but they are pricier than shingles.

Pros:

  • Lasts long: A properly installed and maintained slate roof will outlive the homeowner. It can remain intact for over 100 years
  • Durability: Slate roof tiles are strong enough to withstand the elements. Slate is water-resistant, fireproof and cannot be penetrated by water
  • Environmentally friendly: Slate roof tiles are pretty much rocks with some composites added in. It is one of the greenest roofing materials
  • Appearance: Roofs made with slate tiles are more aesthetically pleasing

Cons:

  • Cost: Using slate tiles for roofing will cost a few extra thousand dollars more than an asphalt roof
  • Weight: Slate tiles are heavier than asphalt tiles. The support structures in the home should be strong enough to hold their weight
  • Trickier to install: The installation of slate shingles requires a high level of experience and expertise
